PCOS At An Early Age

I've been doing a lot of self-reflection lately, and I want to share my experience with PCOS. Maybe it will inspire someone. I was diagnosed with PCOS quite early, during my late teens. The diagnosis didn't really come as a surprise because of my symptoms. At sixteen, I looked like a man in his mid 20s. I was very tall and fat. I also had hair growing on my face and chest. I looked horrible.

To make matters worse, my period was irregular. I have gone two years without a single drop of blood from my vagina. When I was diagnosed, I was placed on medications and a diet plan, and things started to get better a bit. The stress of suffering from PCOS was too much for a teenager to handle. I was bullied a lot in school. I had very few friends, because no one wanted to associate with me. I was called a freak of nature. I realized quite early that the majority of people do not even know what PCOS is, so those with PCOS are treated unfairly because of the unflattering symptoms. There is a stigma on awareness and if the stigma isn't broken, more harm will be done. PCOS really affected my mental health as a teenager, but with time I became comfortable in my body. With the help of my doctor, we reversed the symptoms, and I even conceived through IVF. My journey is not over, but it has become easier. Let's spread awareness of this condition this month and lift the stigma that is attached to it.
