Difference Between PCOS and Fibroid


Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and fibroids are two common reproductive conditions that are often confused for each other. This is because they both cause growth in the reproductive organs. Knowing the difference between these two conditions is important for the diagnosis and treatment.

Both conditions require the help of a women's health specialist because the conditions more often than not leads to infertility. PCOS and fibroid share similar symptoms but are completely different conditions.PCOS is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age, while fibroid middle aged/ older women. PCOS happens in the ovaries while fibroid is mostly found in the uterus.


Both PCOS and fibroid can cause :

  • heavy or irregular periods,
  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • infertility

The first difference between these two conditions is in the location. PCOS affects the ovaries while fibroid grows in the uterus. PCOS causes enlarged ovaries and small cysts which grow on the ovaries. Hormonal irregularities is also common in women with PCOS,like oily skin, irregular body hair growth, acne, no ovulation, or weight gain. Fibroid causes bloating in the abdominal area,enlarged uterus, pain during sex, and frequent urination.


The tests required for both diagnosis are different. When diagnosing PCOS, blood pressure, glucose tolerance, physical exams for hormonal irregularities will also be done. Ultrasounds will be done to check the state of the ovaries. When diagnosing fibroid, they may administer various pelvic exams and screenings, like an ultrasound or an MRI, to form a more detailed picture of the uterus.
